Add Style and Value to Your Home With Hardwood Floors
Hardwood flooring is one of the many ways people add style and value to a home. It's also great for people with allergies, because hardwood flooring doesn't trap dust, pollen or other allergens like carpet can.
The two main types of hardwood flooring, solid hardwood and engineered hardwood. Depending on your location and where in the house the floors are installed, will decide the type of hardwood floors you should choose. Solid hardwood is not recommended in "below-grade" environments, like basements, because humidity can cause the flooring to expand.
Engineered hardwood takes thinner pieces of hardwood and layers them on top of each other so they expand and contract very little. Installing these kinds of wood floors is usually not a "do it yourself" project and should be done by experienced professionals.
If you choose to have hardwood floors in your home you need to take care of them. Wood floors should be cleaned frequently since Dirt and dust could cause scratches. In Southern California hardwood floors can be exposed to a lot of sunshine that can cause wood to fade, so the proper window coverings and shades should be put in place to block direct sunlight. Also putting rugs or any other types of mats on top of the hardwood flooring causes discoloration and they should be moved frequently. Be caustious about putting hardwood floors in rooms with high humidity because of the warping and aging effect it can cause.
